Working in Korea - Korean Medical System

Korean Medical System

The Korean medical system is great. It is one of the reasons we chose to return to Korea for a second year. All employees are required to have the government run health insurance. You pay for half and your employer pays for another half. It isn’t very expensive.

When visiting a regular heath clinic you do not have to make an appointment. You can just walk in and the best part is they are not crowded. Usually there are only one or two people ahead of you. Most doctors speak English. Usually the receptionists and nurses do not. When I am at the doctor's the nurses cannot communicate with me so they often grab my arm and take me where they want me to go. It is quite funny.

A visit to a doctor usually costs about 3,000 won / $3.00. Medicine can be as cheap as a dollar. The trick is they usually only give you enough for about three days and then tell you to come back. You can ask for more if needed.

The medical services in Korea are just as modern as in America. How ever they are not always quite as clean as we would like. If you need a urine test they often will give you a paper cup to pee in. Then the nurses will grab it without gloves and do her test. Its not too bad. They have all the technologies we have in America for a lot less price.
