So we survived our first day of school. Today is Sunday, but we had to work, but that is okay, because we are getting paid overtime. We only had to work a half day. Some of the other teachers gave presentations to show us how they teach classes. It was fun. Then we went to lunch and then home. It was quite a relaxing day.
It looks like we will be working a lot of weekends, but we have decided that we will just pretend that weekends don’t exists and then we will be happy when we get one. Whenever we work a weekend day we get the choice of taking overtime or we can take another day off as compensation for the overtime day. Overtime days seem to be only about 4 hours, so it’s a pretty nice deal either way.
While at work, we asked more specifically about the dress code, and we have learned that this particular school is quite relaxed about things. Jeans and t-shirts are perfectly ok here. They did ask that we don’t wear shorts, unless it’s just really hot; but I am amazed that they are willing to let us wear them if it is very hot. Our last school would not have been so understanding about these things.
We are about to go shopping with one of our co-workers. We made plans to meet him out front. Unfortunately, it started raining really hard before we made it into our door. There is really loud rolling thunder that is setting off car alarms. This will be quite an adventure.
We met Justin (our co-worker) as planned and walked through pouring rain to the grocery store. It’s not a large or nice as the stores we went to in Ilsan, but it is not bad. At least it’s close!

This morning we start our first real day of work. They told us we will be observing classes today and possibly teaching on Tuesday. I hope we have a little more time to adjust before we are teaching, but we’ll manage either way! We still aren’t sleeping through the night, which is a cause of some concern since work will have us busy and we want to do a good job and make good impressions. So far, we are impressed with our supervisors. They seem to have a clear understanding of what the most important issues are and emphasized that sometimes we’ll just have to grab on to them and not let go until they answer our questions (that included our co-workers too, not just the supervisors).
We should be meeting the rest of our co-workers today, which will be nice. So far, they seem like a group of pretty good people. The 35 minute drive from our apartment to our school will provide a good opportunity to get to know them better.
