Natural Disasters and North Korea:
Korea does not have very many natural disasters. I have not felt an earthquake in the two years I have lived here. They don’t get tsunamis because the Japanese islands usually protect Korea from them, although they are technically possible near the coast. There are not tornadoes or hurricanes (except on Jeju and sometimes the south coast). So it is safe here.
Korea also has a very low crime rate. Crime does happen so you have to be careful but it is very safe here. Last year I felt very comfortable walking 20 minutes to get home by myself at 10 pm at night.
Many people are worried about North Korea attacking. Technically the two Koreas are still at war. They have had a cease fire since 1949. Sometimes North Korea will do something stupid like attacking an island or sinking a South Korea military ship. But usually they don’t do anything that would hurt the private citizens. Often times the Western News media will hype up what is happening in Korea more than the Korean News companies will. We feel very safe. They could attack, but if we were living in America someone could attack there too.
